The bearing of arms in defense of one’s country is one of the oldest and most noble professions in the world. African Americans have been integral to American military might from the time of American’s inception. African Americans have fought for the United States throughout its history, defending and serving a country that at one time denied us our basic rights as citizens. Despite policies of racial segregation and discrimination, African American soldiers played a significant role in America’s military history from the colonial period to the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Enslaved African Americans were hopeful service in the Armed Forces would eventually lead to full Citizenship. They were hopeful that loyal and heroic service would dispel the institutional myths that Black soldiers were not as capable as their white counterparts and needed more intensive leadership and training. To this day and time African Americans see military service as a way to better life for self and family: (G I bill for education, VA loans to buy a house, 20-year retirement, and medical services for life). It is duty, service and country before self, having the desire to subordinate self for service of our country. A commitment to step up and serve knowing they may have to pay the ultimate cost for service to this great nation! It is Patriotism before self, giving up our rights as to where we live, work and what field of work we do. We put country and our fellow citizen’s welfare before self, even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice. The uniqueness of being part of something bigger than self; Service in the military. It is the sharing of core values, goals and experiences that bond us together. When we serve side-by-side in situations that demand we rely on each other for mission accomplishment and our
survival we become part of the Military Family. We put our life on the line for the citizens of this great nation. There is no greater feeling, privilege or honor than being part of the Military Family.
I served because I raised my right hand and took this oath:
I swear I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the order of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers and those appointed over me, so help me God. To keep this oath: “All gave some and some gave All”.
